  • Lyme dx
    • 100mg BD *10-14 days; 28 days in Lyme arthritis.

Capsule:

  • 100mg
  • Should be swallowed with lots of water because it can cause GI disturbances and esophageal ulceration.
  • Administer with food or milk with gastric irritation.

Tetracycline.

Broad-spectrum bacteriostatic synthetically derived from oxytetracycline. It inhibits protein synthesis thus preventing cell replication.

  • GI disturbances e.g. N & V.
  • Esophageal ulceration if not taken with sufficient water.
  • Super-infections.
  • Tooth discoloration.
  • Interfere with development in children <12 years.
  • Renal & hepatic disturbances.
  • Negative nitrogen balance in elderly.
  • Increase intra-ocular pressure.
  • Nail discoloration.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding.
  • Children below 12yrs.
  • SLE
  • Co-administration with hepatotoxic drugs.
  • Possible antagonism with penicillins.
  • Iron, calcium, magnesium, aluminum decreases absorption, potent anticoagulants and hepatotoxic drugs.
  • Decreases effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
