- Chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients who can’t use allopurinol:
- 40mg OD
- May increase to 80mg OD after 2 weeks if serum uric acid <6 mg/dL is not achieved
- Tablet:
- 40mg
- 80mg
Take without regards to meals
Xanthine oxidase inhibitor
It inhibits conversion of hypoxanthine to xanthine to uric acid
- Elevated LFTs
- Exacerbation of gout
- Hypersensitivity to class/components
WARNING
Patients with established CV disease treated with febuxostat had a higher rate of CV death compared with those treated with allopurinol
- Azathioprine
- Didanosine
- Mercaptopurine
- Theophylline
